NIGHT SEVEN · KALARATRI · UNDERSTAND HER

The Sacred Is Not Always Gentle.

Not every sacred form is meant to comfort us at first glance.

Some traditions also make room for what is fierce, destructive, difficult, and hard to look at.

Kalaratri belongs in that space.

Akka:

“Why would people worship a form that looks frightening?”

Ammomma:

“Because the sacred is not always shown as gentle.”

Veda:

“Then what is She showing?”

Ammomma:

“That some things are terrible.”

Ammomma:

“And pretending they are not terrible does not make them disappear.”

Akka:

“So the form does not have to become softer?”

Ammomma:

“No.”

Ammomma:

“Sometimes we begin by seeing clearly.”

Traditional descriptions of Kalaratri preserve a dark and terrible form.

Older stories also use the image of Kalaratri — terrible night — in scenes of destruction and death.

The tradition does not always make these realities beautiful before allowing them into sacred imagination.

That does not mean darkness is evil.

It does not mean fear is the lesson.

It means the sacred world is large enough to hold more than comfort.

The sacred does not always arrive in a form that comforts us.

A difficult form does not need to become gentle before we begin to understand it.
