Meet Her

Night One · Meet Her

The Daughter of the Mountain

Veda looks again at the name.

Veda:

Ammomma... is the mountain part of her name?

Ammomma:

Yes. Shaila means mountain. Putri means daughter. Shailaputri is the Daughter of the Mountain.

Akka:

And she is the first of the nine?

Ammomma:

In the Navadurga sequence we are following, yes.

Veda:

So we meet her at the beginning of the nine—but her story had already begun?

Ammomma:

Yes. A name may open one part of a story without containing all of it.

Shailaputri is Parvati, born as the daughter of Himavat—the lord of the Himalayas. Her name remembers that relationship: she is the Mountain’s Daughter.

Tradition also remembers an earlier part of her story. Before she was born as Parvati, she was Sati, daughter of Daksha and wife of Shiva. At Daksha’s sacrifice, Sati could not bear the dishonour shown to Shiva and relinquished her body. She was later born as Parvati, daughter of the mountain.

In the familiar Navadurga sequence followed here, Shailaputri stands first.

A note about the nine

Traditions do not always preserve the same Navadurga list or iconography in exactly the same way. GoluGirl follows the familiar sequence that begins with Shailaputri and concludes with Siddhidatri. It is one received sequence—not the only expression of the nine.
