MEET KATYAYANI

Katyayani

The room grows quieter. Before them is Katyayani. She does not rush forward. She does not look restless. Beside her is the tiger. In one hand, a sword. Veda notices it immediately.

Veda:

She has a sword.

Akka:

Is She going to fight?

Ammomma looks at the image for a moment.

Ammomma:

Maybe first, look at Her.

Akka looks again.

Akka:

She is very still.

Ammomma:

Yes.

Katyayani is remembered as a powerful form of Devi. Our sources connect her with the gathering of divine energies and with the defeat of Mahishasura. Her images do not all look exactly the same. But one detail appears in the tradition we are following tonight: the Chandrahāsa — her sword. Before asking what the sword means, notice something else. Katyayani carries strength without looking scattered by it.

Strength does not have to look restless.

GG Lens

A sword may catch our eye first. But Katyayani asks us to notice the whole form: the stillness, the focus, the direction. Sometimes power is easiest to recognize by what it does not waste.

What do you notice first when you look at someone powerful?
